fyf fest @ los angeles historic park in dtla (9/5/10)
this is the day when all of al lay’s crazy hipster kids come out and play. some of them ride their bikes and chain them on the fence, while others fight for street parking on the sketchy dtla roads. it normally marks the end of summer and everyone is out to rage.
it was my first time attending fyf fest and all in all, i think it’s crazy nuts that we’d have such an awesome line up readily accessible in our nutzo city. a couple of gripes: the heat was unbearable, the lines were ridiculously long, you had to basically sell your first born for a bottle of water, and the dust nearly made you cough up rocks. the whole event was so poorly organized so why do we do it? for the sake of awesome musics.
fyf is like a mini coachella in la’s backyard. in one day i got to catch magic kids (so fun!), growlers (wearing flour face paint), cults (kind of need to work on their live performance), warpaint (mesmerizing), best coast (equipped with a lovely new ali), wavves (though i could barely see them through the dust), ariel pink’s haunted graffiti (ariel sported a lovely man purse during the whole set), dead man’s bones (ryan gosling omgomgomg), washed out (who sounded really washed out), cold cave (electro pop fun!), delorean (best dance party of the night), and panda bear (i got the last 30 seconds of his set but what i saw was amazing).
needless to say, i’d gladly put up with all that nonsense to experience a line up like that for $30 any day. just give me a heads up so i can beat the lines and fill up some bottles with water.
